Welcome to the conversation!
Rewriting the Narrative of Menopause & Rite of the Womb Retreat

Menopause as Initiation. You are not ending. You are becoming.

The Call of the Change

If you've found your way here, you too probably believe that, one, the menopausal journey is one of transformation with a profoundly spiritual thread & two, it's time to rewrite the story of 'The Change'!

Many middle-aged women moving through ‘The Change’ can struggle with what comes next.

While the years of the menopausal journey can be extremely challenging - this challenge holds purpose. With each hot flush we are burning off the unnecessary, with each 3 am awakening we are given time to contemplate our lives in peace, with the body making what seems like constant demands, we learn to listen deeply & perhaps begin to care for ourselves in a way that once seemed impossible. This is not disfunction, this is initiation.

The tough times do pass believe me... if you read no further than these next few lines, please hold onto three pieces of advice.

  • Give yourself time; time to rest, time to reflect, time to journal, time to face yourself, time in silence.

  • Listen to yourself; your body & inner-knowing are trying to guide you.

  • Find a way to gracefully accept what has passed & know that somewhere inside you have the resources to transition naturally & powerfully to the next phase - The Wisdomful Woman.

You are not losing yourself, you are becoming

Modern societies story of Menopause is one of general decline, you do not have to accept this story. Menopause is a time of descent. A descent into our core, where, should we choose to walk this internal spiral downwards, we will retrieve our inner-most treasure! This phase of life is a sacred rite of passage, a middle-aged initiation into the role of  the Wisdomful Woman!

Menopause, or the journey towards the day when the holy ‘one year’ mark has passed is an initiation & to view it as less is to do yourself an injustice.

Yes, you may feel as if you're going a bit mad (other people may reinforce this view)

  • Firstly, all interesting people are a bit mad! Secondly, madness is a creative force, our focus is to refine this creative surge and create our legacies!

Yes, you may find your tolerance levels are at an all time low.

  • This is okay - you've likely been tolerant, too fucking tolerant, your whole life...  Just for now 'intolerant women' are learning what is theirs and what is not - it's a burning off process.

Yes, you may feel as though you have lost control of yourself/your life.

  • As though a vast gap has been created and you're unsure how to navigate this expanse. The social narratives of fear, symptom lists & negative views of ageing peddled by the beauty & pharmaceutical industry are slopped out on the path ahead of us, creating a preoccupation with the idea of youth & associated beauty, which often fills this expanse, but it really doesn't have to be this way. There is something bone-deep beautiful that radiates from the older woman, freed from insecurities, whose earthy grounded-ness holds a sense of calm presence. She who is able to yield to the seasons and remain centred!

No, you have NOT become a horrible person. Calm, loving kindness, does return post menopause). You simply have a new and improved bullshit filter that comes that with an adjustment in hormones. From nurturing Mother, whose impulse is to do just that, to grounded, Wisdomful, sovereign woman with clear purpose and strong intent to live life on her own terms & do what she is here to do! What may feel like rage, detachment and an unravelling of who you were is in truth a sacred process of disidentification. You are shedding, refining and coming home.

The Question of Change

If you feel like you are hurtling towards emergency, I have a question for you:

“What do I want?” as in "What do I want , really?"

Not what’s expected of us. Not what’s appropriate. Not what others need. But what do I, truly, want?

As women we can become so caught up in caring, responsibility, the endless spinning of practical and emotional plates that asking ourselves the pivotal question “What do I want?” can be lost in the mix.

For some women this very question can seem so overwhelming that it's avoided all together. Peri-menopause, the change in hormonal levels and the sometimes over-powering levels of rage & inability to even tolerate other people breathing, is the perfect time to ask, contemplate & begin to answer "What do I really want?"

Over time I've changed the tone of this question to - "What is mine to do?" - in this broader context, in a spiritual sense, I have found that when these two questions are held together with reverence, they create an equilibrium. I was able to find a balancing point, a centre, an alignment - and it's here in the centre that Wisdom is found. The ability to position ourselves at the centre of our own lives & overtime, maintain this position, is key to a conscious, empowered menopause - a mid-life miracle - entailing endless possibilities!

This is what we explore, uncover and nurture within the Rite of the Womb Retreat. We do not offer a "quick fix" to the Change. We offer sacred space for you to return to your own knowing.

The old story we are leaving behind...

The Mother role is so well defined, and some would say all pervading in western culture that the possibility of something, anything, beyond seems intangible – surely Grandmother-hood is the next phase. Right? Yes, of course, when the tiny beings present themselves or there is a community opening for the older woman (minus the tiny beings) but is this all? Inhabiting the grandmother role for many looks much like continuing the same routine as was lived during motherhood – kinda like Motherhood Round 2… becoming a glorified babysitter but with more aches and pains and no ‘pocket money’ for your services.

What if what's on offer to us during this sacred transition is more, sooo much more than that?

What if the roles we can assume are far more rich, varied & nourishing than we ever imagined?

What if these newly unearthed roles became the foundations for a freshly imagined society?

The Wisdomful Woman you are walking towards...

1. At the change of life we have the potential to become the fully embodied channel between heaven and earth - just as the oracles, the pythia of Delphi once were.

2. We are undergo a thorough process of refinement - the waves of nature, our bodies, the divine plan is showing us the route to our whole selves should we surrender.

3. A profound sense of self, anchored in our core, a solidity, certainty & courage guided by our inner compass - no longer being externally referenced!

So, if we can begin to talk about menopause as an initiation and a natural process which, with our own conscious engagement, engineers us into wholeness then we can, together, make change in our world.

Collective consciousness after all, is exactly that. If we women, at the change of life, can make actual CHANGE then we positively effect the collective - we reset the future trajectory for those who come after us. Yes, the daughters and granddaughters but also the sons and grandsons too… as a present, the embodied wise woman figure guides young men into appropriate behaviour towards the female of the species and their inner feminine.

A strong matriarch is the trunk of the family tree. Just as the masculine mountains rest on the feminine earth… we, women are a basis for growth that has long since been ignored and suppressed. From here, a new archetype emerges—not just Grandmother, not just Elder, but Wisdomful Woman.

The Rite of the Womb Retreat is an invitation into her becoming.

Most things in life begin with a choice – the avoidance of choosing, in cases such as the menopausal journey – reeks havoc. So, a choice it is. This is why I asked previously “What do YOU want?” Once we know our why  (What we want) we can make a choice. Sounds easy huh.

This choice, this commitment must come from within – some say belly, others say heart – a few say via insight. Take all three .

  • Begin by scheduling 1 private hour.

  • Light a candle, have your notebook & pen to hand.

  • Find stillness

  • Ask yourself the question: "What do I want?" - jot down your answers.

  • Ask yourself the question: "Why do I want this?" - jot down your answers

  • Ask yourself the question: "What is mine to do?" - jot down your answers.

  • Contemplate your why & what. Take your time. Do your answers inform what is yours to do this life time?

  • Make your commitment to yourself. This is your internal fire

  • Then undertake simple sacred ceremony.

  • A consciously created sacred space in which the internal fire is honoured & the Wisdomful one is invited.

  • Speak with her often  & tend this motivating fire when the challenges of peri-menopause occur…

  • How will the two of you unify? Jot down your answers & implement this into your daily life

  • Blow out your candle.

How do we start to make these changes?

The Rite of the Womb

For me this came in the form of the Rite of the Womb.

Like many other ceremonies, rites, and sacred performances that have reached into my life, the Rite of the Womb originated in the jungles of South America – a place on earth that still knows, still breathes and her peoples see no separation between themselves and the great Mother.

The Rite of the Womb has been available in the 'western' world for some time now; often offered in the usual 'bleeding & breeding' women's circles that cater almost solely to the Mother phase.  My personal engagement with her extraordinary capacity to reconnect heaven and earth through the female channel during menopause, galvanised my intent to share this work re-imagined - as a formalised initiation for peri-menopausal and menopausal women that they, we, you, me, can rewrite the narrative of the change and really dig deeply into what it means to be Menopausal - to lead communities, to guide others when they reach the change of life and over time bring about societal change. This way less young girls, mothers, peri-menopausal women will walk through their lives unaware of who they truly are - Wisdomful Women, Sacred Channels, Elders, Experienced Teachers & Soulful Leaders - Great Grand Mothers!

In linear time the Rite of the Womb perhaps came to me late, but it was perfect like all timing in life... the influence of her energy has been like a cosmic golden thread that tightened and strengthened my own creation, bringing a full-bodied, powerful,  strengthened quality... from this place, I am now here to serve you, whole.... and I am honoured to do so.

It is my pleasure to now share this adventure with others on the Rite of the Womb: Mid-Summer Retreat.

The Rite of the Womb, frees women from pain, suffering & fear.

This energetic initiation supports you in deeply connecting or reconnecting with your inner compass, your natural rhythms, the Earth, her seasons, during the peri-menopausal initiation & beyond...

In a beautifully curated sacred space, supported by the Forever Grandmothers, this energetic initiation guides us in giving birth to the death & fear that resides within the womb space, individually, ancestrally & collectively; no longer a victim but a sovereign woman

who lives in alignment with her own sacred centre. She hears clearly, the guidance & insights from within.

As women heal and release themselves from the age-old story of oppression, the Earth heals in unison.

A new map, a new way of living generates itself as you too become a guardian of the Womb Rite.

Are you interested in how you can deeply connect or reconnect with yourself, the earth, the seasons, your season – your natural rhythms before, during and beyond the menopausal transition?

How do we begin?

We begin by saying yes to the Change, not as a decline, but as a sacred initiation.

We begin by gathering, as women have always done, around the fire of shared Wisdom.

We begin with one step - answering the call to the Wisdomful Woman.

If this resonates with you, if you find your body leaning towards a circle where menopause is revered, not misunderstood - you are warmly invited.

The Rite of the Womb Retreat is not a spa-holiday.

This is a rite of passage, held in community, woven with sacred ritual, soul work and deep reflection.

You will be invited into:

  • A sisterhood of women walking the same path

  • Honest conversations

  • Sacred witnessing

  • Body based practices

  • Restorative Shamanic rituals for release, reflection and emergence

You will not be "taught". You will be welcomed home to what you already carry.

"The womb is not a place to store fear & pain. The womb is to create & give birth to life!"

In sacred circle, held by compassionate & experienced older women we honour and witness each other, allowing us to remember & value who we are & the middle-aged initiation we are walking. Supported in taking the deep dive into our core, and emerging as wisdomful, wise teachers & leaders with years of creativity ahead of us.

We each hold a unique medicine and our world is in much need of these individual healing salves - as each woman embodies her whole self we create change in the world. As each of us set our intention to navigate menopause the soulful way we are each rewriting the narrative of the change!

I invite you to remember who you came here to be:

  • Give yourself permission ~ to embody all aspects of yourself

  • Align with your own natural menopausal rhythm ~ allow your body to guide you home

  • Step into the circle of change ~ become part of the community that is restoring the natural place of the menopausal Widomsful Woman

  • Carry the Rite of the Womb ~ forwards to others

  • Focus your re-imagined creativity ~ and re-configured self to create the legacy you KNOW is yours to do!

This is an initiation, a reclamation and a return home.

Mid-Summer Retreat (2 days)

Preparatory work

How we support you
We start supporting you in preparing for the Rite of the Womb retreat via an exercise we have created known as 'The Altar to Self'.

You will receive full instructions and printable resources to create your 'Altar to Self' in your resource email after sign-up & as part of your welcome pack.

The Altar to Self is designed to help you identify:

  • Where you are now

  • Which 'aspects of self' (characters) are dominant, reluctant or scattered

  • What behaviours, habits & patterns are long outdated and ready for a sacred funeral of fire

How you support yourself

Print out the template for 'The Wheel of Time' (our personalised calendar) & begin building your own Wheel of Time. Bring the pages with you to the retreat. If you do not have access to a printer, we will provide template copies on the day.

Other preparatory work that you will facilitate for yourself is to provide your birth/natal chart, date, time & location of birth. Don't worry if you don't have a birth chart, we can direct you to free sources of support.

Friday 20th June: Mid-summers Eve Traditional Shamanic Fire Ceremony

(7pm onwards) - The Avalon Centre, Glastonbury

A night where we choose, from belly, heart & mind to step across the threshold, ritualising our intent to consciously walk the initiatory path of peri-menopause into menopause and beyond. Creating personal ceremonial offering to represent the release that we now welcome (all resources for the creation of your offering are provided. However, you are very welcome to bring your own special natural symbols/flowers/herbs). Fire Ceremony is a powerful & transformative undertaking. We open sacred space and hold each other as we each take our time at the hearth.

"Held, we give birth to the death that resides within, creating space for the

voice of the womb to speak loudly & clearly"

We invite & welcome the loving support of the Forever Grandmothers, those who will hold us, as we say goodbye to the old stories and create space for the Sovereign, Wisdomful women we are becoming who will lead, educate and bring healing balance to our families & communities.

"I feel like I have finally filled the space of feeling like 'something is missing'.
I feel 'tooled up' with the teachings that Charlotte passed on to me, and confident that I can still tap into them whenever I feel the need"

Taniya Hughes. UK.

A little about my own story... & how this journey may weave in with your own.

My lived journey with Menopause...

Getting straight to the point... I knew that the journey through menopause was to be wandered raw. I knew HRT was not for me (synthetic hormones and such are not my friend) not to mention going against my inherent womanly intelligence. I knew deep within me that this was to be a natural, sometimes herb-assisted, process.

Absent of any human guide in the early days, I listened to my gut, my heart and spirit insight, feeling menopause as an initiation into a deeper more connected version of myself. If the Shamanic Way has taught me anything over the last 17 years of deep training (with The Four Winds Society and personal spirit-led initiations), then it is to face myself again and again and that to interrupt the process of menopausal transformation would only prolong the inevitable.

I had no wish to remain in the 're/productive' part of my life, I had a yearning to discover my own depths, to engage with who I was, to become post-menses. The sovereign, Wisdomful Woman - to begin the road to elderhood and rediscover an age old transition first hand. I believe in the power of the Wisdomful Woman & work to restore her position in modern society - an environment in much need of matriarchal guidance, care & support. This became the foundation of how I now support other women through "The Change".

The following points were all part of my own journey...

Listen to the stories of our lives; where were the challenges, repeating patterns, shitty situations that had been swallowed, over-looked or ignored. Peri-menopause & the days beyond will invite you to revisit all and everything that is so far unresolved... this is training for the Wisdomful Woman!

Listen to the intelligence of our bodies and trust in the ancestral guidance that is available to all; female humans are one of only three species on Earth that traverse menopause - there is a reason for this.

Listen to your bodies new seasonal rhythm; there is still a four phase 28 day 'month' - a Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter - when we live by this renewed rooted cycle life flows...

Listen to the wombs voice, hear her new name, as a being who is ready to live a new purpose.

You could ask, "Well how did you KNOW this was the way for you?"

For me at least, nature knows, the body knows and we too can 'know' if we are prepared to stop and listen.

My life's work...

It's taken me decades to become the woman that I am today. This may sound both obvious and or strange. What I mean by this is, it's taken decades to define what is mine, own & celebrate it, release what is not with grace & sometimes, forgiveness. My process, that of course continues, has been to consciously choose my threads and weave them into the fabric that is my life... I had to become the woman I needed when I was a young, lost & angry girl who endangered herself due to lack of guidance, support and any real nurture. I am this woman now and continue to grow, deepen & expand with each revolution of the wheel.

I've been a fully qualified post-16 teacher for over 20 years. In these earlier years I held the role of Behavioural Management Teacher in the UK prison system - here I worked mainly with young men & sometimes women, who had had their liberty revoked. This taught me the murky depths that humans will reach toward when they are traumatised, rejected, in emotional pain, unseen & unaccepted by their 'clans & villages'.

Since leaving the Prison Service over a decade ago, I've devoted my life to soul work. Shamanic work has been my main focus: offering 1-1 Shamanic Healing Sessions, spiritual mentoring and retreat facilitation alongside leading workshops and the Call To Remembering: Shamanic Apprenticeships.

Over the years others have named me as a Whistle blower (I'm honest, I say what I see), a trail blazer (I'll create my own path if there isn't one), down-to-earth (working class woman) & wise... wisdom is something that is earned not gifted, oftentimes through hardship or heartbreak but always by overcoming situations that at first appear insurmountable.

These years of academic & spiritual learning, personal healing and traversing the Other Worlds have been fundamental in facilitating my own conscious journey of peri-menopause to menopause and beyond.

In the interest of transparency, I am not a menopause coach or a medical professional. I'm a spiritual guide, sometimes called a shaman and I'm not everyone's cup of tea to be sure! But who wants to be lukewarm, insipid & overly sweet? Maybe I'm not a cup of tea at all, but a fire. My fierce nature & intolerance for bullshit are balanced by my professional & spiritual training, mature age, life experience, loving kindness and a core-deep desire to bring about meaningful lasting change to the world.

My years of experience, combined with The Rite of the Womb, has given me a consistent, reliable, grounded & integrated internal compass (womb), my womb has a her new name & purpose post-bleeding and I am now able to not only weave the threads of my life but also spin these very threads into existence!

This is the role of the Wisdomful Woman. I walk beside you - solid, kind but fierce when needed! Together, we create space for your next becoming.

The Rite of the Womb & Renewed Cyclical Living

Rte of the Womb

The Rite of the womb connects, or reconnects us after clearing and healing, to the voice of the very human womb, the womb of the mother and the ever giving energy of the womb of the cosmos.

Here we begin to live differently – trusting in the divine timing, the wombs voice and the planetary influences all combined with that internal fire (the balance of internal elements), that compass that says strongly ‘this way sweet one’… this is yours to do, this is your place to be, this is your new creative mission. Here – here is how you feel in wholeness – this is perhaps a better description of the ‘Grand Mother Role’ in place of the aforementioned ‘Mother Round 2’.

Here sits the Wisdomful Woman – and she is waiting within all to be honoured and enthroned at the centre of the self.

Beyond the rite herself there is a new calendar to discover 'The Wheel of Time'– ones momentum fuelled by intrinsic energy and a natural knowing – guiding our lives to the highest destiny and all because you have recognised and committed to menopause as an initiation!

Using the body's seven light centres we are offered a micro-cosmic map of the greater worlds – if we can access each in turn or at least in a way that feels right for us, we have a sacred and ancient container in which to undertake the most profound of womanly journeys.

Seven chakras – seven archetypes – seven phases of en-real-en-ment.

Internal solidity, being internally referenced, develops for us a strong core – a unique yet ubiquitous root system to draw on and secondly, as a consequence, reflect into the worlds – there is much talk about creating safe spaces and little focus on becoming IT – we are our own safe spaces (with no need for the victim/rescuer dynamic).

Becoming safe and sacred space evolves as we face ourselves again and again by choice – rather than procrastinating and waiting gingerly for our lives to somehow become what we've always dreamed of!

No judgement here, sometimes it’s what we learn in our avoidance that helps us overcome it in the longer term.

The Rite of the Womb marks the threshold – the conscious knowing why, choosing, breathing deeply and stepping in to the void.
